Enjoying Cherry Blossoms

In Japan, we have four distinct seasons, and during springtime, cherry blossoms bloom all over the country. The cherry blossom, or “sakura” in Japanese, is a special flower that captivates many people with its beauty. When cherry blossoms bloom, people pay close attention to the cherry blossom forecast on the weather report, eagerly anticipating the start of the season.

One of the most popular ways to enjoy cherry blossoms in Japan is to have an outdoor picnic called “ohanami” (literally meaning “flower viewing”) under the blooming trees in parks, along riverbanks, or in gardens. There are also many traditional foods and drinks associated with cherry blossoms, such as “sakura mochi” (sweet rice cake wrapped in a cherry blossom leaf) and “sakura tea.” Even convenience stores offer a variety of sweets themed around cherry blossoms during the season.
For Japanese people, the cherry blossom season is a special time of year. It’s a time to appreciate the beauty of the cherry blossoms, enjoy outdoor picnics, and savor cherry blossom-themed foods and drinks to welcome the arrival of spring.
Personally, I regret not trying the limited-time “sakura mochi pie” at McDonald’s last year.
If you’re planning to visit Japan during the cherry blossom season, I highly recommend experiencing our culture and traditions by going to an ohanami picnic and trying some of the delicious cherry blossom-themed treats. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the beauty of nature and the start of a new season.
