March 3 is the Tokyo Marathon, though the start time is around 9:00,Traffic regulations will start early in the morning.

Hello to everyone traveling in Japan. This is Kimura from Tokyo.
As you can see in the blog title, on March 3, the city center of Tokyo will be the marathon course.
It is the Tokyo Marathon. This is a popular event with many participants from overseas!
    Good luck to all runners!

In this blog, there will be traffic restrictions on roads during this Tokyo Marathon.
Some of you tourists who are sightseeing in Tokyo may have plans to visit Tokyo on March 3. I would like to send out some information to such people.

Tokyo Marathon start time is 9:10 on March 3

According to the Tokyo Marathon event outline, the marathon itself will start around 9:00 am. There are multiple times regarding the end of the competition, but the maximum time is 4:10 PM. Although the marathon itself will take place during the daytime, the associated traffic control will be in place from early morning. If you plan to travel by car, cab, or bus on the day of the marathon, you may need to be careful.

The Tokyo Marathon website has a map of the regulations.

The English version is on the bottom page and may be helpful.

The regulations are scheduled in 15 minute increments with details about the time of the regulations.

If you are traveling for the first time, you may not be able to link locations to tourist destinations.
I will try to comment on the sights I can think of in the places where traffic restrictions are scheduled.

    • ①Gijido-N The start point is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, but this is on the west side of Shinjuku. There is an electronics store called Yodobashi Camera nearby in this area. This is the spot where you see the photos of the streetlight neon lights up on Instagram.
    •
    • (5) Shinjuku5 This area is on the east side of Shinjuku Station and has many restaurants. A short walk will take you to Shinjuku Gyoen, a garden.
    •
    • (6) Jimbocho Jimbocho is famous among Japanese as a used book town. You can see quite a few tourists here, so some of you may be planning to go sightseeing.
    •
    • ⑨Uenohirokoji Ueno Hirokoji is an area that even Japanese tourists might visit. It is close to Ueno Zoo, Shinobazuno Pond, Ameyoko shopping street, the Tokyo National Museum and the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum if you climb up the hill.
    •
    • 11 Nihonbashi Area This area is the center of the Japanese community, so many visitors to Japan are probably planning to stay in this area. There are many up-to-date buildings, and among them are many stores that are uniquely Japanese. The main Mitsukoshi department store is also located in this area.
    •
    • 16 Kuramae This area has many wholesale stores for various industries. There are many companies in this area.
    • 18 Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate The Kaminarimon gate is famous for its large red lanterns. On either side of the gate stand the gods of wind and thunder. Behind it is a temple called Senso-ji. The shopping street also has an old-fashioned atmosphere. I like the sweets called “Kaminari Okoshi” sold there.
    •
    • 24 Ginza This area is home to some of the most exclusive stores in Japan.

Crossing the course is prohibited even for pedestrians.

Even pedestrians are prohibited from crossing the marathon course, and are advised to use pedestrian bridges and underpasses.

Also, some expressways will be closed to traffic due to the marathon.
Since expressways are usually congested on weekends, it may be a good idea to avoid driving around Tokyo on this day.

Also, Shibuya is out of the way for major sightseeing spots.
Or, in the northern part of Tokyo, Ikebukuro is also off the course.

This is just a rough information,
I hope this blog will give you an idea of what the Tokyo Marathon is all about.
