I Caught a Cold: My Go-To Remedy for a Sore Throat is Ryukakusan Powder – It Works Wonders
Hello, this is Kimura from Tokyo. It’s a rare three-day weekend, but unfortunately, I’ve caught a cold and am stuck in bed. While the fever has gone down thanks to medication from the doctor, I still can’t seem to get rid of the sore throat. Today, I want to introduce a reliable remedy for this situation.
For Sore Throats, Use “Ryukakusan”
In Japan, many households keep Ryukakusan on hand. Ryukakusan is a medicine for coughs and throat discomfort. There are several types of Ryukakusan products, but I highly recommend the powdered type. Although the powdered type can be a bit challenging to consume, it works directly on the throat. For convenience, there’s also a lozenge type, but it contains sugar, which I prefer to avoid. Personally, I recommend the powdered type for its simplicity and lack of unnecessary ingredients.
Ryukakusan: A 200-Year-Old Medicine
I never thought much about it before, but Ryukakusan has been around for approximately 200 years. In Japanese history, this dates back to the Edo period.
How to Use Ryukakusan
It’s taken without water.

When you open the box, you’ll find a very traditionally designed tin container inside.

The lid includes a specially designed spoon. For adults, one heaping spoonful is the standard dosage, which equals approximately 0.3 grams.

The powdered type has a very fine texture. To use it, scoop some powder with the spoon and place it on your tongue. Here’s a tip: once the powder is on your tongue, let it dissolve slowly, and your throat will gradually feel refreshed. However, be careful not to inhale immediately after placing the powder on your tongue, as the fine particles might cause you to cough or choke.
