Discovering Hokkaido: The Birthplace of Sapporo Miso Ramen

Tokyo is located roughly in the center of Japan, while Hokkaido, the northernmost region, is famous for its severe winters and fresh seafood. It’s also the home of Sapporo miso ramen, a beloved dish worldwide. Many travelers visit Hokkaido, especially the town of Rusutsu, for its top-quality snow, attracting winter sports enthusiasts from across the globe. You can fly from Tokyo to Sapporo in about 1.5 hours.

Hokkaido is also a paradise for food lovers. I’ve previously introduced popular souvenirs from Hokkaido, but the delicious food scene extends far beyond that.

Among Hokkaido’s famous dishes, you’ll find Genghis Khan (grilled lamb), seafood delicacies, and of course, ramen! Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, is known for its iconic Sapporo miso ramen. Today, I found a frozen version of this delicious dish at the supermarket—let’s cook it and see how it tastes!

Here’s a closer look at the frozen ramen package. The key features of Sapporo miso ramen are its yellow, chewy noodles and rich, miso-based broth. Some restaurants serve it with butter and corn, but this particular brand highlights bean sprouts and onions for added flavor. I have to say—it tastes amazing!

The cooking instructions are written in Japanese, so let’s break them down:

    • No need to add water.
    • Heat on low for 30 seconds to melt the soup.
    • Heat on high for 6 minutes and 30 seconds, occasionally loosening the noodles with chopsticks.
    • Once everything is boiling, your Sapporo miso ramen is ready to eat!

When you open the package, you’ll find the ramen frozen solid.

The package includes chashu (braised pork), bamboo shoots, and vegetables. Since it’s a frozen product, the toppings are limited. That’s a slight downside, but considering it only costs around 300 yen, it’s a great deal!

Simply open the package and place everything into a pot—that’s already half the work done! All that’s left is to heat it up.

Adding Extra Vegetables to Enhance the Ramen

To enhance the meal, I decided to add extra vegetables for a nutritional boost.

I stir-fried some vegetables and added them to the ramen—but the result didn’t look great!

My attempt to elevate the frozen ramen with extra vegetables resulted in a dish that didn’t look very appealing. It turned into a mysterious brown creation that wasn’t visually appetizing at all!

However, when I took a bite, it was delicious! Despite the visual failure, the added vegetables brought out extra sweetness, making the miso broth even richer. For a frozen Sapporo miso ramen, it was surprisingly satisfying!
