I had a cheese gyudon(beef bowl) on my way back from an outing to Ikebukuro.
This is Kimura from Tokyo. Today I wouldlike to share with you a story about a boring daily life of just an uncle.
I just had a cheese gyudon at Sukiya on my way home from shopping. That’s all.
For those who don’t know, let me introduce Gyudon
Gyu-don is a traditional Japanese dish consisting of rice topped with beef and onions. Beef and onions are stewed in a sweet and spicy sauce seasoned with soy sauce and sugar. The beef is tender and juicy, and the onions are sweet. The sauce soaks into the rice and is delicious. Gyu-don has been eaten in Japan since ancient times. In ancient times, dishes using beef were rare in Japan, and the opening of Japan to Western culture and food was brought to Japan by the Edo shogunate’s policy of opening the country to the West. Beef, as a Western food, has come to be accepted by the Japanese. Gyudon was one of the easiest beef-based dishes to prepare. Gyu-don is a dish that is a part of Japan’s history and culture.
There are restaurants specializing in gyudon
Gyudon is available at many gyudon chain restaurants in Japan.
Sukiya/Yoshinoya/Matsuya/Nakaou are the most common chains, and I think Sukiya has the largest number of outlets and is the most popular. Yoshinoya was the first restaurant to start serving gyudon. Of course, the taste of the same beef bowl differs from restaurant to restaurant, so there are different opinions among people, such as the Yoshinoya and the Matsuya. Why don’t you try to compare them when you come to Japan?
It might be a good idea to collect several kinds and bring them back to your hotel to compare!
My recommendation is Sukiya’s Cheeses Gyudon.

Sukiya’s Chees gyudon is a beef bowl topped with three kinds of cheese. The cheeses are red cheddar, egmont, and mozzarella. The red cheddar has a nutty aroma and rich flavor. Egmont has a mild, sweet flavor. Mozzarella has a melting, milky flavor. Cheeses have a creamy, rich flavor that mixes with the sauce of the beef bowl. Sukiya’s Chees gyudon tastes different from other gyudon.
And when you eat it, you can customize it yourself.
First, those who order Chees gyudon will be given Tabasco, so please pour just the right amount on it.
Next, there is a spicy spice called shichimi on the table. Add an appropriate amount of shichimi as well.
Then, add red ginger, a favorite of all Japanese people.
This is the final state of the dish!

Gyu-don is cheap and tasty!
The current dollar-yen exchange rate is about US$1=143 yen. With that, I feel like there are a lot of foreign tourists. There is an apparel store called American Eagle in Ikebukuro, and I tried it out, but it was crowded with people from overseas. There were many denim items priced at 3,000 Japanese yen, but I wonder if they would seem even cheaper to people from overseas.
A bowl of beef on rice costs about 400 yen.
A single portion of cheese beef bowl is about 580 yen.
I will continue to introduce cheap but tasty food to you,
I hope you will visit this blog again.
